White Hot

March 26th, 2012 by Brandy MelvilleWhen we think of Orange County, it’s hard not to be bombarded with thoughts reminiscent of the OG housewives, Jack Black, Marissa Cooper, a certain clan of high school students or neighborhood upon neighborhood of track homes and perfectly manicured lawns. However, just as Los Angeles is not (completely) a hot bed of self-obsessed celebrities and self-impressed nobodies, so to is Orange County so much more than meets the eye.
In 2007, two buddies of the band, Thee Makeout Party, started Burger Records. Sean Bohrman and Lee Noise crafted this independent record label and soon to follow, a record store in a strip mall in Fullerton. They’re known not only for bringing excellent music to Orange County by constantly hosting shows, but collaborating with bands to produce high quality cassettes.
This past weekend, Costa Mesa’s hidden gem, The Observatory, saw 9 hours of great music, even greater barbeque and all in a parking lot behind a Home Depot. Some great performances included Fidlar, Wavves, OFF!, and Ty Segall, who performed atop the crowd when they held up both his microphone and him.
If you’re hanging out in Southern California and looking for something to do, I suggest getting familiar with these bands. Every single one on this poster. You will not be sorry.

Love from Italy
March 16th, 2012 by Brandy MelvilleOne of the greatest things about Spring and Summer is opening up magazines to the colorful and inviting ad campaigns. Every couple of years, certain ones seem to catch your eye and stick with you. This year, for us, it’s the Dolce & Gabbana womenswear campaign. Set in Italy, it tells a big family story in a beautiful place with beautiful people.

Bookworm Wednesdays
March 14th, 2012 by Brandy MelvilleAs you can tell by our impressively drawn header, we love books. We don’t know about you, but we’re still mourning the end of Harry Potter(even though we all know he defeated Voldermort on May 2nd, 1998, duh).

That being said, we as a generation must embrace the new books and series and here at Brandy, we’re trying to do just that. We worked our way through the outstanding Stieg Larsson series surrounding The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and are currently working on the Hunger Games. It got us thinking though, how many books have we read and what they’ve meant to us. From classics like To Kill a Mockingbird to books like Catcher in the Rye that have helped us find ourselves, there is no end to the lessons of literature.
Here’s some of our favorite classics, but we want to know your favorite books too! Make sure to tweet us @BrandyUSA your favorite book of ALL time.
1. Atlas Shrugged-Ayn Rand
2. To Kill a Mockingbird-Harper Lee
3. On the Road-Jack Kerouac
4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo-Stieg Larsson
5. East of Eden-John Steinbeck
6. The Count of Monte Cristo- Alexander Dumas
7. Animal Farm-George Orwell
8. The Catcher in the Rye-JD Salinger
9. Frankenstein-Mary Shelly
10. A Farewell to Arms-George Orwell
